Rakuten to Deploy Cisco’s Routing Technology for 5G, IoT Services

Japan’s e-commerce firm Rakuten says it would use routing technologies from network equipment manufacture Cisco, to increase its business support capacity to its customers with 5G and Internet of Things (IoT) services.

Rakuten is also the first mobile operator to deploy a network based on Open Radio Access Network (RAN) technology, which enables network functions to run on the cloud thereby reducing physical equipment requirements.

The deployment of this new technology will serve its 4 million subscribers with more automation, consequently leading to faster deployment of services, reduced latency and lower power consumption. Chief Technology Officer, Tareq Amin says, “we are going big into enterprise now, in a very elegant cost-efficient manner, without having to incur cost addition”.
